The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that about 75 per cent of deaths of people over the age of 65 in industrialised countries are from heart disease, cancer and cardiovascular disease (such as stroke),kidney disease anddiabetes. By practicing healthy habits in personal life one can prevent some common diseases likediabetes, heart disease etc. Here are some tips to remain fit in old age.

Drink enough water: It purifies your body machinery and helps your heart to function well. It also keeps you away from kidney related diseases and urinary problems.

Exercise regularly: Regular physical activity can stop you from looking and feeling old, and may even help you live longer. A study by McMaster University researchers has shown that there is no substitute for exercise in old age for being fit. Avoid obesity because this is the gateway to many diseases-such as heart diseases, diabetes and arthritis. A new study shows that walking for 30 minutes a day could lower the risk of death from colon cancer. Simple exercise could also reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetesand some types of cancer and can even be helpful in post cancer treatment.

Well balanced diet: Well balanced diet plays a very important role in keeping you healthy. Avoid taking rich food like sweets, overstuffed and oily food. You can add calcium-rich diet as it will strengthen your bones. Add fruits and vegetables in your daily diet to maintain good health at old age.

Be happy and engage in various activities: During old age, social isolation, low income and depression may affect health. Loneliness is a very common problem in old age and leads to mental problems. The fear of getting old often causes anxiety. During this time, every senior person should take up various works to keep busy for mental satisfaction such as reading, writing, solving puzzles or playing computer games.
