Aging: 5 things to stop the hands of time
From magic potions, to wrinkle removers, to fat injections and much, much more. Women have been searching for the best way to help them look and stay young forever and 60-year-old Sherie Mason is no different.
"The most recent thing that happened was I got my first age spot," says Sherie Mason. "I cleanse, but then I use an anti-aging serum all over my face."
Every year, Americans spend $8 billion on cosmetics, and trips to the plastic surgeon are up 59 percent since 2000.
"I'm not used to seeing any lines and they are coming so I don't like them," says Mason.
But before you nip and tuck, Dr. Jennifer Landa says staying young has a lot to with how you live. First up, toxins.
"Staying away from toxins is a big thing that people can do to avoid looking old and feeling old," says Jennifer Landa, M.D., a chief medical officer in anti-aging regenerative medicine at Body Logic MD.
The toxin BPA in plastic water bottles mimics our hormones, specifically estrogen, which can give women an imbalance and increase risk of heart disease, causing our organs to age.
"Aging of all of our organs every single internal organ, including of course the skin, which is one of our biggest organs," says Landa.
Besides plastic water bottles, watch out for canned food. It could contain BPA also. Look for labels that say BPA-free. Also try taking milk thistle supplements, which help the liver cleanse toxins out of the body. Another trigger for aging is inflammation.
"One of the biggest that we can talk about is sugar," explains Landa. Sugar causes our body to store fat which increases the risk of inflammation.
"Inflammation in the skin and sugar causes cross linking of collagen and causes wrinkles," adds Landa.
And get this, sugar is in all white and brown foods too - like bread, potato, and pasta.
Another way we speed up aging is a lack of vitamins. A study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows healthy levels of vitamin D may help to slow the aging process and protect against age-related diseases.
"One thing you can do is 15 minute sun exposure per day with no sunscreen,"says Landa.
From 15 minutes in the sun to 7 hours in bed! Sleep is an aging culprit too.
"We all need to sleep 7 to 8 hours to get the best effect of our anti-aging regimen," says Landa.
Lack of sleep lowers your immune defenses, inhibiting cell turnover, causing your skin to look dull and droopy. Lastly, make dinner plans with your girlfriends, it helps with your social life and blocks stress.
I hope you learn new tips that can slow down aging process..
